Where did little Black Sambo Go?

Some classic stories of the twentieth century, that many American children read and loved, were pul led from publication because of the racist and stereotyping of the American black citizens. The characters in the story, was the little boy named Sambo, his mother named Black Mumbo and his father named Black Jumbo. With the naming of the characters, could be classicized as a racist stereotyping, with the names like Mumbo Jumbo, that all blacks practiced witch craft, or black magic. It’s not the only place where Racist stereotyping took place in the United States; vaudeville, was the other main stream of entertainment(in the early 20th century, 1880's-1930's), that used black faces and lines that made the blacks look foolish and worthless.

It was only 34 years after the end of slavery, when her first book titled "The Story of Little Black Sambo", was published in 1899. The author of Sambo series- and other titles- was Helen Bannermen (1862-1946), From Fdinbugh, Scotland. Her other works included: The Story of Little Black Sambo (1899), Story of Little Black Mingo (1901), Story of little Black Quibba (1902), Little Degchie-Head: An Awful Warning to Bad Babas (1903), Little Kettle-Head (1904), Pat and the Spider (1905), The Teasing Monkey (1907), Little Black Quasha (1908), Story of Little Black Bobtail (1909)  Although, the names can be racial stereotyping of the black people and made the blacks looked less intelligent in that time period (that they are not)  These books would not be published in today’s market or in today’s society(good thing)  The stereotyping isn’t execrable in today’s world and things are getting better for the American blacks.

Every year on Martin Luther King day they celebrate with a breakfast of tiger pancakes and tiger butter. The once loved stories of Samba, that I heard as a child is in the past and liked hearing that story and never thought of it as rascal(until now) The world has changed for the better, the hate of those days are gone. This children story is remembered by many of us still today, but see the true meaning and the hate of it.

A favorite Disney film of my childhood was "Song Of The South". I'll dare you to try to find a video of that film today. Political correctness will not allow it. When I visited with my wife's parents in California years ago, they took me to the last "Sambo's" restaurant- another casualty of racial/political correctness.

The fact that we finally woke up to the fact that CRAP like this was (and is) racist and harmful, is something I'd much rather cherish, as opposed to the "stories" themselves.

Racism is alive and well, it's just wearing a better funded disguise.

(just my opinion)

If you read the post over again, you see that I am not for rascal profiling at all!! This is on the classic book list in many book sites! I do remember this book and did like it. Not for the rascal part of it but, for the story of it.
sorry you feel the need for name calling.

You know, I have never read the referred book. I do recall, vaguely, a restaurant named Sambo's that served breakfast. I equated it with Denny's, Shoney's, etc. I never equated it with racism- call me naive. I do remember, when in California and entering the Sambo's out there, a clientele of a mixture of races.

I dare you, your self-righteous, pseudo liberal, to know me and know the events that have transpired in my life, and to know my friends and even family members, and still label me racist. You are pretty good at riding in on your white horse and calling others names. I think I know now why you hide your face in your profile.

My comment was purely innocent- it takes a real Putz, totally full of herself, to react as you have done.

Just took a walk with my dog. Thought about your comment, and my reply. Cooled down, though just a bit.

My comment about your profile is inappropriate. Consider it to be a quick punch, thrown out of anger.

I really was not intending to enter into an indepth, deeply considered, and carefully expressed philisophical/ethical interchange with daniel. Just dropped a comment, that's all. And if the American public wants to reject a restaurant chain with a racist-tinged theme, then good for them.

I stand by the rest. You're a bully.

Well Dave, I didn't take any affiance to your comment at all. I am not a rascal person and I know and have a lot of great black friends(most better then my whites friends) I was just pointing out a book that is a "CLASSIC BOOK", Lindy had a problem with that book. Sorry Lindy, you feel that way, but I am not a racist or ethic profiler, who would and/ think againest other for race. In my post/article, The ton was against rascal profiling-and that how it is!!!

Dave,You got me so excited reading your comments to Lindy that I almost spilled my coffee all over myself lol lol. No hurt feelings on this end Dave, you know that right?

you're right, Dave. I am a bully. When I see one. Funny, you do like to swing as much as any bully does, but you also are quick to take it back in order to maintain that 'Jesus speaks through me' attitude, if that's what you want to call it. Your jab about my profile picture is, well, silly. I've had a variety of pictures over the couple of years I've been here and they usually show my face. This particular one is silly, which I do well. I have the ability to laugh at myself, you should try it, even if it means you can't get up off the floor for a while. 'Just dropped a comment' doesn't really fly. Whatever you say is very much a calling card of your own. You choose what you say and what you comment on. The whole point of this post is to advertise a book considered hurtful to a great number of people. Doing so is a very inappropriate and irresponsible choice. While you throw around you talk about having black friends, perhaps you ought to do one better and invite some of them to read this post and your comments.

I don't know how you operate in the physical world, but here, you seem to have sold your soul to the comment devil. You're out here hocking your blog in any direction.

It makes sense that my obvious disliking of you would have to be about something broken in me. Nevermind that I have perfectly amiable conversations with a wide variety of people here, including Christians, some of whose blogs you also frequent. You rub quite a few people the wrong way, but don't stop now and look in the mirror.

Daniel, I haven't called you a racial profiler. I am saying you are guilty of perpetuating something hurtful in your choice to publish this. It may seem harmless to you, but again, invite along a few black people to check this out and see how they feel about it. You have a right to express yourself in any way you seem fit. Because you are doing it in a public forum, you are getting others' opinions. And that's the way it goes. Your choice.

It is not a swing at any of the rascal groups. We are sorry that my Blog and my post have offended anyone. This is a free form in which and to the point opinions and subjects matter that I think makes an interesting post. I have three of my black friends that had read my Blog and enjoy the reading of my post. They remembered this Literature and enjoyed it. In your profile, said that you’re marked yourself as a trouble maker and one to speak your mind. In which, you have the right to do, as I have the right to post this article.

You have said, that I have rub the people here on Tblog the wrong way, That is unfortunate that I have upset anyone in any way. I have a large Tblog friend list and many of returned to my Blog to read my new posts. It’s sad that you have a dislike for me and my Blog and I would have enjoyed getting to know you and read your Blog. Unfortunately, this may or may not happen because of the situation brought-fourth here.

My Blog contains post of my life, art, music and literature. This book in question, has been a classic literature since 1899, up to the year that the book was taken out of publication in the 1970's. again. It is unfortunate that this book upset you or insulate you in anyway at all. I am not looking to enter a one year debate with you or name calling(as you feel the need to do) Please, Don’t attack others who commenting on this post or posting or on this Blog. We value comments and thoughts of the subject posted, but we do not value mud-sieging.

Relax, Dan. I wouldn't spend a year on anything like this. I hope you wouldn't either. Most people don't take tblog so seriously that they have to go out and walk their dogs to cool off. If you look a little closer at my last comment, I was speaking to 'pastor' Dave regarding my dislike and the idea that he has rubbed some people the wrong way. I don't know you and have not read anything of you beyond this post. I'm inclined not to read the thoughts of someone who chooses to publish something so careless. Just as I'm inclined not to read the thoughts of 'pastor' Dave, given that all I've seen of him has been exactly what you call 'mad slinging.' But again, it's your choice what you publish. I've made it clear how offensive it is.

By the way, blocking users isn't really very efficient around these parts. A user can always figure out how to create a new blog and come back for more. Buh-bye.
